The Legend
(This Legend/Story is courtesy of the
book Weird Pennsylvania)
Like the canal system that
put it on the map, Frick's Lock is history. It's a completely deserted Chester
County village of about ten abandoned buildings, some dating from the 1700s,
some from about 50 years ago. Although it's within striking distance of highly
populated areas, it will never be developed or lived in again, because it's in
the shadow of the Limerick power plant.
The stone buildings of Frick's Lock are now boarded up and overgrown, and the place looks appropriately mysterious. Some of the buildings are clearly from the Revolutionary war era, others are more modern, but all are in a state of despair.
In it's heyday, Frick's
Lock was a thriving commercial boat town, a big economic factor in the 1800s.
Canals were the best way to transport materials back then, so when the Schuykill
Navigation Company routed a sixty-mile long canal through the area in the 1820s,
Frick's Lock really took off.
The lock was closed down in 1890 when the canal company went bankrupt. The
canals were drained in 1930 and by the late 1900s the village had declined so
much that no opposition was put forth and the limerick power plant was built in
it's backyard. The village has been deserted ever since.

Our Experience
We first explored Frick's
Lock back on February 2, 2007. It took us about an hour and 1/2 to finally find
the place as we ended up circling the general area for about 25 minutes. When we
get to the lock, we were surprised at how many of the houses still had furniture
in them. It was like everybody just got up and left one day, leaving everything
behind. As you will see below, vandals had disgraced many of the properties. A
couple of the more creepy things we found were left by vandals, such as the
pentagram and "Hell Waits 4 U" inscription on the wall of a room and the Blair
witch style room. The blair witch room basically was a room with the blair witch
symbol on each wall and a single folding chair in the middle. It was an
extremely creepy sight.
The coolest and most disturbing house that we investigated was this one house
that ran close to the old canal. It was more of a giant barn than house but it
was filled with fishing nets, microscope slides and other scientific materials.
In the basement, things were even weirder as we found jars and jars of preserved
crabs dating back to the 1980s. The craziest thing in this house, however, was
the giant cage that was in the corner of the basement. It was about 8x8 feet
long and wide and had a deadbolt on the door. I'm not sure exactly what someone
would keep in a cage that big, but it was really interesting.
