ANNOUNCEMENT: On
Halloween 2008, BBH Productionz will be releasing their third feature
documentary on the Atco Ghost.
The Legend
The story of the Atco ghost
is set in the southern New Jersey town of Atco. Atco is a small town surrounded
by the Pine Barrons and bordering Wharton State Forest. The story claims that on
Burnt Mill Road, there is a house, and a few years ago a young boy was
supposedly struck by a car and killed while chasing his ball into the street.
Burnt Mill Road is a long road that leads straight into the thick forest of the
Pine Barrens. Another version of the story claims that it was a truck leaving
the nearby local sewage plant that killed the boy.
Legend has it that the boy's spirit still roams the road looking the people who
killed him. Many people over the years have claimed to see the ghost. One
way you are supposedly able to see the ghost is by going to Burnt Mill Rd. at
midnight and park three telephone poles away from the house closest to the
sewage plant. The house has a fence around it. Once parked you are to
sound your horn 3 times, blink your headlights 3 times and if you are lucky the
image of a young boy chasing a basketball out into the street can be seen.
Another way to see the ghost, supposedly is to park your car in the same spot,
get out and walk 20 ft. behind your vehicle and then look towards you vehicle.

January 26, 2007
We have visited Burnt Mill Rd. in Atco about three times in the past two weeks. We heard of this place from Logan's boss who claimed it was too scary to get through. We then looked the legend up and found it online and also in the book "Weird NJ". Our first trip down there was on a saturday night at about 11pm. When we got to Burnt Mill Rd. we ended up pulling right into the pine barrons and driving through. After we circled through the barrons for a bit, we came out again to the part of Burnt Mill road where the boy was allegedly killed. Before we where able to try the light trick we were met by these two other groups of people also looking for the Atco ghost. We spoke to them for a few minutes before we noticed a cop car coming are way and we scattered.
Our second trip to Atco
New Jersey was on January 20th 2007. We basically did the same drive and such
and then met back up at a Wawa. Logan decided at the wawa that he was gonna head
home, citing work in the morning, but Nick and Chuck and two bbh associates
Jackie and Mike decided to head back down. When Nick and Co. got down to Burnt
Mill Rd. and entered the pine barrens they noticed a black animal run across the
road. It looked in the shape of a small gorilla, which is probably the easiest
way to describe it. The animal remains unidentified. however, theories on what
it could've been range from black skunk, fox, dog and a bear cub.
After we got through driving in the pine barrons we got back to the section of
Burnt Mill Rd. where the boy was killed. We pulled up to the light poll, turned
off the car, flashed our lights and such but nothing appeared. We did this for
about 10 minutes and seen nothing. As Nick started the truck, Chuck noticed a
set of headlights coming from the Pine Barrons about 50 yards from the truck.
Nick decided to find out if they were looking the ghost and quickly turned
around and headed into the barrons. When we entered the barrons, the lights
disappeared. We drove through the pine barrons at a speed fast enough to where
anybody who could've been in there would not have had time to drive out. The
disappearing lights freaked out those in the car and we called it a night.
Our last trip down to Atco was on January 25th. This trip was a fact finding mission as we were equipped with our video cameras. We took pictures and video from inside the pine barrons, outside and the surrounding area. We also shot video of us trying the light trick. From our point of view we didn't see anything in any of the photos and/ or video we shot. The links to the photos and Videos are under the "Our Encounters" title.
If anybody has any stories, photos, video or anything else to add to this legend, please post it on our forums. We'd love to hear what you have to add to our story and maybe we just might use it!!!
